Google Classroom has become an indispensable tool for educators and students across the globe, streamlining workflows and enabling collaboration within the Google ecosystem. Since its inception, the platform’s goal has been to transform teaching and learning worldwide. A key part of achieving that goal involves making Classroom accessible to as many users as possible, and wide language support is a crucial part of that equation.
Already boasting support for over 55 languages, Google is significantly expanding Classroom’s language capabilities. Announced recently, Google is adding support for an additional 17 languages across both the web and mobile versions of Classroom. This move further solidifies Classroom’s position as a truly global platform and makes it easier for more educators and students to utilize its features in their native tongue.
The rollout is happening in two phases. Available right now, users can expect to see support for the following additional languages:
- Afrikaans
- Assamese
- Estonian
- French Canadian
- Icelandic
- Kazakh
- Swahili
Coming soon, Google will add support for these additional languages:
- Albanian
- Armenian
- Azerbaijani
- Burmese
- Georgian
- Irish
- Macedonian
- Nepali
- Sinhala
- Uzbek
Switching to one of these newly supported languages should be seamless. Google Classroom will automatically adopt the language preference set in your main Google Account settings (for the web experience) or your mobile device/app settings (for the mobile app), provided it’s one of the languages Classroom now supports.
It’s worth noting that while the core Classroom experience will be available in these new languages, Google mentions that certain specific features might not be immediately accessible in all of them. This includes tools like Read Along, Practice sets, Originality reports, and the integrated Gemini features. We expect support for these features will likely expand over time as the localization process continues.
This expansion is yet another big step towards greater inclusivity and usability for Google Classroom users worldwide. By lowering the language barrier, Google empowers more educators and students to leverage this powerful platform, regardless of where they are or what language they speak.
