Google continues to deepen the integration of its Gemini AI across the Workspace for Education suite, this time bringing a creative new tool to the classroom. Following the initial rollout of Gemini features for educators last year, a new update is now hitting Google Classroom that allows teachers to generate podcast-style audio lessons directly within the platform.

The goal of this new feature is to provide students with a different way to engage with instructional content, catering to various learning modalities. Rather than just reading through a document or watching a video, students can now listen to a conversational, AI-generated summary or deep dive into the subject matter they are studying.

Customizing the classroom experience

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all audio generator. Google has built in a significant amount of customization to ensure the content remains relevant and age-appropriate. Educators have the ability to define the target grade level, specific topics, and core learning objectives before the audio is produced. This level of control ensures the generated “podcast” acts as a true companion to the teacher’s existing curriculum rather than a disconnected piece of media.

Furthermore, teachers can specify the format of the audio discussion. Gemini can generate content for multiple speakers, allowing for an interview-style format or a more casual conversational flow. This versatility makes it easier to keep students engaged, as the tone can be adjusted to fit the complexity of the lesson or the energy of the classroom.

Administrative control and best practices

As with most AI tools entering the educational space, Google is keeping a close watch on privacy and age-appropriate access. These new capabilities are managed at the administrator level and are restricted to users designated as 18 years of age or older. This ensures that while teachers can leverage the tool to create resources, the AI generation itself remains behind a professional gate.

Educators can find these new tools under the Gemini tab in the Google Classroom navigation bar. Google is also reminding users that while the tool is powerful, the AI can still make mistakes. Teachers are encouraged to review and refine any generated audio to ensure it meets local policies and educational standards before it is assigned to students.

Availability and rollout

The rollout for this feature began on January 6, 2026, and is expected to be visible to most users within a few days. It is being made available to a wide range of Workspace for Education tiers, including Education Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus.

By turning instructional text into high-quality audio conversations, Google is giving teachers a unique way to meet students where they are. In an era where podcasts are a primary source of information for many, bringing that same format to the classroom via Gemini is a logical and potentially very effective next step for the platform.
