One of the biggest hurdles with any AI assistant is the context gap. Tools like Gemini are great at answering general questions, but they only become truly powerful when they can understand your specific world. Google has been bridging that gap by connecting Gemini to your Gmail and Drive, but today, they are adding another big piece of the puzzle: Google Chat.

In a new update on the Workspace blog, Google announced that Chat is now available as a data source within the Gemini app. This means the AI can now reach into your conversations to find details, summarize missed discussions, and surface info that would otherwise be buried in a sea of notifications.

Finding the needle in the haystack

For many users, Google Chat is a constant stream of project updates, quick questions, and links that you truly intend on looking at later. Finding a specific detail from a conversation three weeks ago usually involves a lot of scrolling and frustration.

With this new integration, you can use natural language prompts to have Gemini do the digging for you. You can ask things like:

  • “Who is the lead on Project Clover?”
  • “What was the final deadline mentioned for the marketing rollout?”
  • “Summarize the unread messages from my team today.”

It’s essentially giving you a personal researcher who has read every one of your chats and is ready to give you the TL;DR whenever you need it.

How to get started

Like other Workspace extensions in Gemini, this feature is off by default. Admins will need to enable the Google Workspace connection at the organizational level first. Once that’s done, individual users can toggle it on in their Gemini settings.

Once enabled, Gemini can cross-reference your Chat history alongside your Gmail and Drive data to provide a much more holistic, context-aware response. It’s all about staying in your workflow without having to jump between tabs to find that one piece of info someone mentioned in a thread yesterday.

Availability

The rollout is happening now for both Rapid and Scheduled Release domains. It’s available across a wide range of Workspace tiers, including:

  • Business Starter, Standard, and Plus
  • Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus
  • Education Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus
  • Frontline and Nonprofits

This is another clear signal that Google is moving away from Gemini being “just a chatbot” and toward it being a legitimate productivity engine that understands exactly how you work and uses that knowledge to help in the best ways possible.
