If you’ve been following the rise of “vibe-coding”—using natural language to build functional apps without writing a single line of code—then you’ve probably heard of Opal. It’s been a standalone experiment from Google Labs for a while, but now Google is bringing that power directly into the Gemini web app.
Opal is now integrated into the Gems manager, allowing you to create what Google calls “mini-apps” that are far more capable than a standard custom chatbot.
From Prompts to Apps
While we’ve had “Gems” for a few months (like the learning coach or brainstorming assistant), they were mostly just customized versions of Gemini designed for specific tasks. Opal takes this a step further. Instead of just setting a persona, you can describe an entire app workflow in plain English, and Opal will build it for you using the different Gemini models. The integration comes with some great new UI features to make this easier:
- Visual Step Editor: When you describe an app, Opal now turns your prompts into a clear list of steps. This makes it easy to understand exactly how the app is processing information and allows you to rearrange or edit those steps without touching any code.
- Reusable Tools: Once you build a mini-app with Opal, it becomes a reusable Gem that you can return to whenever you need that specific functionality.
- Advanced Control: If you find the simplified editor in Gemini a bit too basic, you can easily jump over to the Advanced Editor at opal.google for granular control over your creation.
The Rise of the AI Creator
This move puts Google directly in competition with other popular vibe-coding tools like Cursor or Lovable. By lowering the barrier to entry, Google is betting that the future of productivity isn’t just about asking an AI for answers, but building your own custom AI tools to handle your specific workflows.
The Opal experiment is rolling out starting today in the Gemini web app. If you’ve ever had an idea for an app but didn’t know where to start, this is your chance to “vibe” it into existence.
