While much of the power of Google’s Gemini AI has been focused on the desktop and web experience, Google is continuing its push to make its AI assistant more helpful on the go. In a new announcement on the Workspace Updates blog, Google is now bringing the power of Gemini in Docs to your iOS devices, allowing you to more effectively understand, summarize, and ask questions about your documents from your iPhone or iPad. This integration means you can work on the go without having to switch between different apps or a separate AI solution.
What you can do with Gemini in Docs on the go
The new integration is designed to help you interact with your documents in powerful new ways, no matter where you are. According to Google, you can now use Gemini in the Docs iOS app to:
- Get the gist of a long research report with an AI-generated summary that you can read on your phone while commuting.
- Ask Gemini questions about a specific detail buried in a budget document so you can find the answers you need before a meeting.
- Quickly create the first draft of a launch plan with a simple prompt right after a team brainstorm while the details are still fresh in your mind.
How it works and what’s missing
Accessing this new feature is simple. You can find Gemini by tapping on the Gemini icon on the top app bar of the Google Docs app. From there, you can choose from different actions like “summarize this document” or “suggest improvements,” or you can submit a prompt of your own.
It’s important to note that this is the first iteration of Gemini in Docs on mobile, and some of the more advanced features, such as Help me Write, Help me Create, and image generation are not available on mobile at this time.
Availability and rollout
This feature is only available on iPhones and iPads running iOS 16 or newer. It is also available for specific Google Workspace customers, including:
- Business Standard and Plus
- Enterprise Standard and Plus
- Customers with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-on
- Customers with the Gemini Business or Gemini Enterprise add-on
The rollout for Rapid Release domains begins its extended rollout starting on July 16, 2025, while Scheduled Release domains will see a full rollout starting on August 18, 2025.
It’s great to see these powerful AI tools become more mobile and accessible. While we hope to see the more advanced writing and creation features come to mobile in the future, this is a fantastic step forward for getting real work done from anywhere.
