We’ve just seen a massive and highly-anticipated update to Gemini: Gemini Deep Research can now draw context from your personal Google Workspace apps. This is one of the most-requested features since the tool’s launch, and it fundamentally changes its capabilities from a simple web researcher into a true personal or work assistant.
This update means you can now create even more comprehensive reports by having Deep Research pull information directly from your Gmail, Google Drive (including Docs, Slides, Sheets, and PDFs), and Google Chat conversations, combining it all with sources from the public web.
Your personal data, now part of the research
The potential here is enormous. Instead of just getting a generic summary of a topic, you can now ground Gemini in your own data for truly personalized and powerful results. Google gives a couple of fantastic examples:
- Market Analysis: You can kickstart a market analysis for a new product by having Deep Research analyze your team’s internal brainstorming docs, related email threads, and existing project plans.
- Competitor Reports: You can build a competitor report on a rival product that cross-references public web data with your own internal strategies, comparison spreadsheets, and team chats about the topic.
This ability to securely connect your private data with public information is a huge leap forward for making Gemini a genuinely useful work tool.
How to use it
This powerful new capability is now available for all Gemini users on the desktop. To get started, you simply select “Deep Research” from the Tools menu in the Gemini app and then select the sources you want it to draw from (web, Gmail, Drive, etc.). The feature is also set to begin rolling out to mobile users in the coming days.
