When Google first introduced Gemini Live, it immediately stood out as one of the most fluid, natural conversational voice experiences available on a smartphone and on the desktop via Chrome. Being able to talk through ideas, brainstorm, and interrupt without awkward pauses was impressive, but it remained largely conversational. That all changed this week in a big way.
According to a new post on News from Google, the company is rolling out a massive productivity upgrade designed to turn voice conversations into direct, multi-step action. By plugging into Personal Intelligence, Daily Brief, hands-free Gmail management, and Google’s autonomous agent Spark, Gemini Live can now execute long-running tasks and coordinate your schedule without forcing you to look at your screen.
According to Google, 63% of users already talk to Gemini out loud. Here is how these new agentic features transform Gemini Live into a true daily assistant.
Background task delegation with Spark
The biggest architectural leap in this update is Gemini Live’s integration with Spark. Instead of tasks ending the moment you stop speaking, Spark allows Gemini to handle complex, asynchronous jobs across Google Docs, Sheets, Drive, and the live web.
- Conversational Brain Dumps to Structured Docs: You can ramble messy, unstructured thoughts out loud to Gemini while driving or walking, and Spark will organize those ideas into structured outlines or draft documents in Google Docs by the time you sit down at your desk.
- Long-Running Multi-Step Jobs: You can ask Gemini to maintain ongoing projects like building a high-protein weekly family meal plan and generating an itemized grocery list based on recipes stored in your Google Drive and Spark will execute it in the background.
Hands-free Daily Briefs
Starting your morning routine no longer requires scrolling through multiple apps to figure out what demands your attention. With the new Daily Brief integration in Gemini Live, you can simply ask, “What’s my daily brief?” and receive an instant, spoken digest combining your most critical updates, appointments from Google Calendar, and pending items from Gmail.
Conversational Gmail inbox management
Tackling a crowded inbox using only voice commands has always been a pain point, but Gemini Live now functions as an interactive email partner.
You can ask targeted questions like “Any new emails?” or “Are there any urgent updates from the kids’ school today?” From there, you can summarize threads, star important messages, archive newsletters, or delete clutter completely hands-free.
Personal Intelligence across past chats and apps
With Personal Intelligence, Gemini Live remembers key details from past interactions so you don’t have to re-explain context every time you open the app.
By connecting the dots across past conversations and Google services – including Gmail, Google Photos, Search history, and YouTube – you can ask natural recall questions like “What was the name of that restaurant we went to in New York last summer?” or “Can you pull up the recipe we talked about yesterday?” and get immediate, grounded answers.
Bringing it all together
The real beauty of this update is how seamlessly these tools work together in a single, unbroken conversation.
While making coffee in the morning, you can ask, “What does my day look like?” Gemini will read your schedule, flag an unread school newsletter or sports schedule sitting in your inbox, and with a quick follow-up prompt like,“Can you grab those event invites from my email, add them to our family calendar, and include driving times?”, Gemini passes the entire multi-step workflow over to Spark to complete in the background.
How to get started
To enable these capabilities, make sure you have connected your Google Workspace apps in your Gemini Personal Intelligence settings. Once connected, simply open the Gemini app, tap the Live sparkle icon, and start talking.
