Gemini’s ability to interact with your PDFs directly in Google Drive is already a fantastic tool for getting quick summaries and finding specific information. But for those who work with very long, complex documents like research papers, legal contracts, or extensive reports, the AI could sometimes lose the plot. Today, Google is rolling out a significant under-the-hood upgrade that makes Gemini a whole lot smarter with your large files.

According to a new post on the Workspace Updates blog, Gemini in Drive now leverages a 1 million token context window when you’re interacting with large PDFs.

A massive new context window for your PDFs

So, what does a “1M token context window” actually mean for you? Think of it as giving Gemini a massive short-term memory upgrade. With this change, Gemini can now “read,” process, and remember the entire context of a very large document all at once, rather than just looking at it in smaller chunks.

This allows Gemini to provide far more helpful and comprehensive responses to your questions because it has a holistic understanding of the entire document. It can see the nuance, track themes from beginning to end, and pull together related information from completely different sections of the file.

It’s a huge boost for anyone who needs to quickly get to the heart of long, dense PDF files, and it translates into some very real, practical benefits. You’ll likely see:

  • Better, more accurate summaries of very long documents.
  • More precise answers to detailed questions that require understanding context from multiple parts of the file.
  • The ability to ask Gemini to analyze and synthesize information across an entire research paper or report in a single conversation.

Availability

The best part is this powerful new feature is currently available for eligible users. To take advantage of the 1M context window for your PDFs, you’ll need one of the following subscriptions:

  • Google Workspace: Business Standard/Plus, Enterprise Standard/Plus
  • Customers with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-on
  • Google One AI Premium

This is a fantastic and powerful upgrade that makes one of Drive’s best AI features even better. It’s a great example of Google leveraging its most advanced model capabilities to improve its core productivity apps.
