Gemini in Google Drive can now “watch” your videos and give you info about them

There’s no way around it: we’re all dealing with more video content than ever. From lengthy meeting recordings and training sessions to product demos and user research, actually sitting down to watch or re-watch everything to find specific information can be a massive time sink. To assist in this, Google is rolling out a fantastic new Gemini capability in Google Drive that promises to make this whole process a whole lot easier: Gemini can now help you understand and extract information from videos stored directly in your Drive!

According to the announcement on the Google Workspace Updates blog, this new feature allows you to leverage Gemini to quickly get to the heart of your video content. Instead of manually scrubbing through timelines or re-watching entire files, you’ll be able to:

• Get quick summaries: Ask Gemini to summarize a video for you, giving you the main points and key takeaways without needing to view it from start to finish.
• Find specific information: Need to know when a particular topic was discussed or what was said about a certain item? You can ask Gemini targeted questions about the video’s content, and it will help you locate that information.

Availability

Google states this feature is designed to help users quickly understand and locate information within their video files stored in Drive. The rollout details are as follows:

• This capability is available for users with Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Business, Gemini Education, Gemini Education Premium add-ons, and Google One AI Premium subscribers.
• It’s available for users with English language set only at this time.
• The rollout is starting now for Rapid Release domains and is expected to be complete by early June 2025. For Scheduled Release domains, the rollout will begin in mid-June 2025 and could take more than 15 days for full visibility.
• It will be ON by default and cannot be disabled by admins or end-users if they have one of the eligible Gemini subscriptions.
