Buckle up, folks, the holiday shopping season is upon us. Deals, closeouts, and “doorbusters” are popping up everywhere you look. And while Black Friday has morphed from a single day of chaos into a month-long marathon, the frenzy to buy remains the same. This is especially true for Chromebooks, where retailers love to slash prices on… well, everything.
The problem? Well, many of those “deals” are traps. Retailers often try to offload 5-year-old inventory with dim screens and ancient processors by slapping a “huge discount” sticker on them. So, before you click “buy,” I want to give you a few very basic tips on how to shop smarter and avoid waking up with a case of buyer’s remorse.
1. Avoid Amazon
I don’t usually issue such stern advice against a specific retailer, but for Chromebooks, Amazon has become a bit of a wasteland. It is rife with confusing listings, third-party sellers pushing expired devices, and titles that misleadingly put “2025” in the description for a laptop released in 2020. Unless you know the exact model number you are looking for, I simply cannot recommend shopping there. Stick to Best Buy, Walmart, or direct from manufacturers like Lenovo and Samsung.
2. The ‘Chromebook Plus’ Shortcut
If you want an easy button, look for the Chromebook Plus branding. This is Google’s own certification for higher-quality devices. If a laptop has “Chromebook Plus” stamped on the lid, you can expect a minimum level of performance, including a good processor, at least 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a Full HD IPS or better display, and a 1080p webcam. It truly takes the guesswork out of the equation.
3. Check the RAM & Processor
If you aren’t buying a Chromebook Plus model, you need to be vigilant.
- Processor: For a guaranteed great experience, look for Chromebook Plus models powered by Intel Core 3, Core 5, Core Ultra, or the powerful MediaTek Kompanio Ultra chip (which Robby has been really loving). If you are shopping on a tighter budget, stick to the capable Intel N100/N200 or MediaTek Kompanio 520/528 processors, and steer clear of anything with an older “Celeron” chip.
- RAM: Aim for 8GB of RAM. While 4GB is okay for a budget buddy like the Lenovo Slim 3, 8GB ensures your device won’t choke when you open a dozen tabs.
- Storage: Make 64GB your absolute floor. Do not buy a 32GB device in 2025. Just don’t do it.
4. Don’t Ignore the Screen
Retailers love to hide bad screens in the fine print. Check the brightness rating—if it’s not listed, assume it’s a dim 220 nits. Look for 250 nits minimum, but aim for 300+ if you can. And please, for the love of pixels, do not buy a 1366×768 screen. Ensure it is at least 1920×1080 (FHD).
If you follow these guidelines, you’ll filter out 90% of the junk and find the real gems. We’ll be highlighting the best deals here at Chrome Unboxed all season long, but these tips will help you shop with confidence no matter where you look.
