In the coming month of November, we should see 3 new #madebyGoogle devices start hitting shelves and shipping from your favorite online vendors.
Google Home, Google Wifi and Chromecast Ultra should all see the light of day this month, but one of those really needs particular content to be truly useful: Chromecast Ultra.
So we’ve put together a quick list of places you can go to get your digital fingers on 4K content the day your Chromecast Ultra makes it home.
Some Quick Setup Guidelines
Now, it goes without saying that to enjoy the benefits of the Chromecast Ultra, you’ll need a 4K television, have the Chromecast plugged into a supported HDMI slot on the TV (some TVs have different HDMI slots and some older ports won’t support 60fps 4K), and have a solid internet connection via ethernet cable or a solid router in decent proximity to your Chromecast Ultra.
We talked about all this setup stuff over here, but just know you need somewhere around 25mbps speed to get 4K to stream properly. Some services allow downloads, which mitigates the need for super-fast connection speeds. Keep in mind 4K videos are large, so if your speeds aren’t fast enough for streaming, you may need to plan ahead to get your content downloaded.
Great Places for 4K Content
So, if you have all those ducks in a row, let’s look at where you can actually get some sweet 4K-ready content to make the most of your Chromecast Ultra.
- Netflix
- Growing list of 4K content daily
- Slight upcharge to access 4K content ($12/month)
- Google Play Movies
- An obvious choice
- Price per rental/purchase is higher than FHD
- Rapidly growing selection of 4K content
- Google is highly motivated to offer more 4K content with the launch of the Chromecast Ultra
- VUDU
- Large library
- Comparable pricing
- App is a bit janky
- YouTube
- Another obvious choice
- Many big YouTubers are starting to publish in 4K (we will be soon)
- Tons of regular folks have 4K-capable cameras in their pocket now, so the amount of content available in 4K is overwhelmingly larger than any other single outlet
- Rentals/Purchases are pretty much the same as going through Google Play Movies
- UltraFlix
- Self-Proclaimed largest 4K library
- Comparable pricing for rentals/purchases
- Lots of IMAX content
- FandangoNOW
- Good selections of new content
- Aggressively priced rentals ($7)
As time goes on, more content providers will make more content that works with the Chromecast API. For right now, this should be a good start and get you off on a good foot.
Each of the services listed above have Android and iOS apps, so the easiest route to finding that little cast button will likely be to grab their app from your favorite app store.
As the Chromecast Ultra starts becoming fully available, give us a shout on social media and let us know how your experience is! We look forward to hearing from you!
