The Canary build of Chrome OS v.60 has turned up a new feature that may be of great interest to many users. “Night Mode” is a feature popular with mobile devices and desktop software that applies a filter to your display that reduces eye-straining blue light that is emitted. The feature is especially useful when reading in low or no light as it reduces the overall harshness of the display.
Up unto now, Chrome OS users were left to their own devices. Third party apps and extensions from the Web Store were about the only option if you wanted Night Mode. Now, it appears developers are working to remedy that problem.
A Google+ post from Brent Sullivan shows a new menu setting in Chrome OS labeled “Night Light.” The feature, available only in the Canary channel, is functioning as you would expect. I moved my Chromebox over to the Canary channel and enabled the Night Light and sure enough, there it was. The familiar, greenish-yellow hue that comes with this feature.
If you are brave enough to venture into the Canary channel you can find the nightlight setting in the system tray beside your avatar.
Chrome OS users have pined for this feature for years and it looks like they (me included) could get their wish before too long. With the feature working in Canary already, it is possible we could see it pushed through the channels sooner than later. We’ll keep an eye on the updates and let you know when it arrives.
