If the rumors are true, (and we have no reason to believe they aren’t) we are just shy of a month out of seeing an announcement from Google of two new Pixel phones and the much-anticipated Chromebook Pixel we affectionately know as ‘Eve’.
Whether or not ‘Eve’ is #madebygoogle remains to be seen. Either way, we have stumbled upon some preliminary benchmarks of the upcoming Chromebook and they look to be as impressive as we have hoped.
In case you missed Robby’s article earlier today, GFXBench is a testing site that developers and others use to:
measure sustained, long-term graphics performance, render quality and power consumption in a single, easy-to-use application.
As it relates to Chromebooks, the benchmarks are testing these stats on the Android side of things. While the tests don’t tell us much about the finer details, they do offer us confirmation of some of the hardware we have discovered in the repositories as well as a few details we were lacking.
Confirmed
Chromebook ‘Eve’ will, in fact, be powered by the new Kaby Lake chipset from Intel. According to the GFXBench tests, we are looking specifically at the Core i5-7Y54 CPU. This is the same chip that powers devices like the Lenovo Yoga 710 and the ASUS Zenbook Flip.
We also see a 2400×1600 display which confirms our previous findings. This will give ‘Eve’ the same 3:2 screen ratio as the Samsung Chromebook Pro/Plus.
What’s New?
The benchmark tests give us a look into the memory and storage of the upcoming Chromebook. These are statistics that are usually hard to pinpoint from commits, especially on Intel devices.
The configuration tested shows 7.7 GB of memory meaning we’re looking at an 8GB Chromebook. Not really a surprise there. With the more powerful processor, 4GB would be a bit timid in a Chromebook of this caliber.
The storage, however, is a major step up in comparison to most Chromebooks. This test is reporting 106GB of space. That’s going to be a 128GB device. Currently, the ASUS C302 is the only Chromebook on the market that I know of with this amount of storage and that variation isn’t even available in the U.S.
We have little doubt that Chromebook ‘Eve’ is the next Google Pixel and the preliminary specs found here just drive home our suspicions. We are looking forward to the release of this device and the opportunity to get our hands on it ASAP.
