In a fantastic new update, Google is rolling out a feature for Chrome that aims to solve the problem of overwhelming website notification overload by automatically revoking notification permissions for sites you haven’t interacted with recently.
This isn’t just a random new feature; it’s a data-driven solution to a real problem. Google shared that their data indicates less than 1% of all website notifications receive any interaction from users. That’s a staggering amount of digital noise for very little benefit if you tend to opt-in for notifications on a regular basis.
To combat this, Chrome will now intelligently identify sites that you don’t engage with but that send a high volume of notifications, and it will automatically and silently turn off their permission to bug you. This is an extension of the work Chrome’s Safety Check already does for other permissions like your camera and location.
You are still in control
If the idea of your browser automatically changing settings makes you a little nervous, don’t worry. Google has built in several important safeguards to ensure you remain in control.
First and most importantly, this feature will not revoke notifications for any of your installed web apps (PWAs). Your important, app-like notifications are safe.
Second, Chrome will inform you when it removes a permission, so you’ll never be in the dark. If the browser gets it wrong and revokes a permission you actually wanted to keep, you can easily re-grant it at any time. And if you don’t like the feature at all, you’ll be able to turn off the auto-revocation feature entirely.
This is a brilliant, “set it and forget it” feature that should lead to a much cleaner and quieter browsing experience for everyone on both desktop and Android. It’s a great step forward in helping users manage online distractions and cut through the noise.
