A new Google test is sending Chrome users straight to AI Mode in Search

For over two decades, the browser omnibox has been the simplest front door to standard Google Search. You type a question, hit enter, and get a neat list of traditional blue links. But as Google continues its aggressive push to make generative AI a foundational part of the daily internet experience, that classic behavior might eventually see its biggest shakeup yet.

According to a report from 9to5Google, Google is currently experimenting with a new feature in Chrome that bypasses standard Google Search entirely, sending users straight into AI Mode threads instead.

Entering AI Mode by default

The experimental behavior was spotted via a newly added flag in the latest desktop builds of Chrome Canary. The flag, explicitly titled “Fulfill Searchbox Queries in AI Mode,” comes with a very direct description from Google’s engineers:

Redirects all normal searchbox queries in the omnibox and realbox to AI mode threads. – Mac, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS

When this flag is manually enabled, typing any standard query into the Chrome address bar skips the traditional search results page completely. Instead, the browser immediately spins up a dedicated AI Mode conversation window to answer your question. After twenty-five years of standard search results from this behavior, having the address bar natively launch an AI thread could admittedly be a bit jarring.

Just an exploration for now

Before you panic about traditional Google Search disappearing overnight, it is important to look at the context of this test. This behavior is currently locked behind a hidden flag, limited strictly to the developer-focused Canary channel on desktop platforms, and is disabled by default. More importantly, a code commit from Google’s development team explicitly addresses the scope of the project, stating:

This is just for exploration. There are no current plans to push this live.

It is incredibly common for Google to build out these kinds of architectural proofs-of-concept just to see how the plumbing functions under the hood and to gather early data on user interaction.

The future of the omnibox

Even though there are no immediate plans to deploy this to the millions of stable Chrome users out there, the fact that Google is actively testing the infrastructure tells a very clear story about where the ecosystem is heading.

Between AI Overviews hitting 2.5 billion monthly active users and the dedicated AI Mode clearing a billion users, Google is clearly treating conversational interfaces as the mainstream destination for information. Chrome is the single largest entry point for Google Search on the planet. While traditional search isn’t going anywhere today, it’s not hard to imagine a future where this “exploration” eventually becomes an optional toggle as generative AI becomes more deeply woven into the fabric of the web browser.
