Google Keep not so long ago introduced a floating action button (FAB) menu that turned note creation into a two-step process and allowed all note options (text, list, image, drawing) to be surfaced at the beginning of the process. While aiming for efficiency, this change added an extra tap for those who – like myself – primarily rely on simple text notes. Thankfully, Google is now addressing this feedback with a new preference that allows users to create text notes by default with a single button press.
This new setting option allows users to bypass the FAB menu entirely. When enabled, tapping the corner button launches a new, blank text note, ready for immediate input. For those times you need to create a list, add an image, or record an audio note, a long press on the FAB still provides access to those options. And I love this!

This update also restores the direct shortcut for creating Audio notes. Previously, users had to create a generic note first, then access the audio recording feature through a secondary menu. This direct access is a welcome return, streamlining the process for those who frequently use voice memos
Google’s development of these changes began back in January, and it’s now making its way to users with a server-side update. 9to5 Google says they’ve observed it in version 5.25.102.01.90 of Google Keep, though the roll-out appears to be staggered.
I know I’ll be on the lookout for this change and cannot wait for it to be a thing. While I don’t use Audio notes too often, I use basic text notes all the time. Being able to open the app, click the FAB and get on with jotting down my notes will be a very welcome change for sure.
