Sometimes it’s the fun, social features that make a music streaming service feel complete. For a long time, YouTube Music has been missing a popular one that Spotify and Apple Music users have enjoyed: the ability to easily share a snippet of song lyrics to your social media or in a message. Well, the wait is over. After a testing period back in April, YouTube Music is now widely rolling out its own version of this feature with shareable lyric cards. This is a welcome, if not a tad overdue, addition that brings YouTube Music up to par with its biggest competitors in the social sharing space.
How to share your favorite lyrics
The process of creating these new lyric cards seems simple and intuitive. According to the report, here’s how it works once the feature is live in your app:
- While a song is playing, head over to the Lyrics tab in the Now Playing interface.
- Tap the new floating Share button that appears.
- From there, you can select which lines of lyrics you want to feature (up to a few groupings).
- You can also pick a background color for your card.
The app then generates a clean, stylish graphic that includes the song title, artist, album artwork, and the lyrics you selected, all with a subtle YouTube Music logo. This image can be saved directly to your phone or shared out to any other app.
The one small catch
It’s important to know that what you’re sharing is just a static image. This means if you want to share your lyric card to an Instagram or Facebook story and have the song playing over it, you’ll still need to use the platform’s own music sticker to add the audio track manually. It’s a small extra step, but good to know.
Who gets it and how to check for it
This new lyric sharing is available for both free and paid YouTube Music accounts and is rolling out now on version 8.24 or newer of the YouTube Music app for both iOS and Android. Since these types of updates are often enabled on the server-side, if you have the latest version of the app but don’t see the feature yet, you can try force-stopping and restarting the app to see if it appears.
It’s great to see YouTube Music continue to add these highly-requested quality-of-life features. While they may be playing catch-up on this one, it’s a necessary and fun tool that makes the service feel more complete and socially integrated.
