In a surprise announcement that feels almost too good to be true, Google revealed that it is rolling out an update to Quick Share that makes it compatible with Apple’s AirDrop. This isn’t a third-party hack or a clunky workaround app. This is native, system-level compatibility.
According to the update, this feature starts rolling out today to the Pixel 10 family. If you have a Pixel 10, you will now be able to see AirDrop-enabled Apple devices right in your Quick Share menu.
Here is the breakdown of what we know:
- It works with AirDrop: You don’t need your iPhone friends to install an app. To them, your Pixel just looks like another AirDrop device.
- The Requirement: While the blog post didn’t dive into the nitty-gritty, early reports suggest the iPhone user likely needs to have their AirDrop receiving set to “Everyone for 10 Minutes” for you to see them initially.
- Security First: Google emphasized that this was built with “security at its core,” noting that the implementation includes strong safeguards tested by independent security experts.
Google frames this as the next logical step in their push for cross-platform harmony, citing their previous wins with RCS and unknown tracker alerts. It’s a clear message: if the other guys won’t build the bridge, Google will build it themselves.
Availability
Right now, this is rolling out specifically to the Pixel 10 family (Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, and Fold). However, Google explicitly stated they are “looking forward to improving the experience and expanding it to more Android devices.” If you have a Pixel 10, check for updates and try sending a file to the nearest iPhone user. Their reaction when it actually works will be worth it.
