The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook has been a staple in the budget-friendly ChromeOS world for years, largely because it delivered a far better display than its price tag suggested. Lenovo has officially given this popular lineup an updated hardware refresh for 2026, and we just got the 8GB configuration into the office to put it through its paces.
If you are looking for a highly capable, portable laptop for a student or standard daily tasks, this device has a lot of what you may be looking for, is on sale quite often already, and like its predecessors, delivers a better screen quality than you’d expect out of a device in its price range.
What’s new under the hood
The headline upgrade for this generation of the Slim 3 is the inclusion of the brand-new MediaTek Kompanio 540 processor. We haven’t had the chance to fully test this silicon under heavy workloads yet, but navigating the initial setup and basic web apps out of the box felt very fluid and responsive. Lenovo is offering this updated model in two distinct internal configurations:
- $529.99 MSRP: Packs 8GB of RAM paired with 128GB of fast UFS storage.
- $419.99 MSRP: Scales down to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of standard eMMC storage.
Beyond those memory and storage differences, the external hardware and capabilities remain identical across both price points, so I’d already tell you to look for a deal on the 8GB/128GB version if this one is of interest to you and you can find the discount that makes sense for your budget.
A premium display on a budget frame
The absolute star of the show here is the display. Lenovo upgraded the older 16:9 aspect ratio and replaced it with a gorgeous 14-inch 16:10 touchscreen pushing a crisp 400 nits of brightness. It features a highly welcome anti-glare coating that helps make the most of that peak brightness, boasts excellent viewing angles, and even features subtle rounded corners on the display that give it a surprisingly premium look.
The physical chassis is entirely plastic, but it feels securely put together with very little deck flex. Weighing in at just under 3 pounds, it is incredibly easy to toss into a backpack. It also brings some unexpected premium features to the table, including a fully backlit keyboard that provides a quiet, tactile typing experience.
The compromises
Of course, to hit an affordable price bracket, concessions have to be made. While the built-in 720p webcam does a surprisingly good job with rapid contrast and skin tone adjustments, I’d always prefer to see a 1080p sensor at least. My biggest gripes, however, belong to the audio and trackpad:
- The Speakers: Despite being upward-firing, the Waves MaxxAudio speakers are incredibly quiet, completely devoid of bass, and make spoken word sound very tinny. These are just bad speakers.
- The Trackpad: While the Mylar surface is smooth and gestures work perfectly, our unit suffers from a bit of wobble, making interactions feel pretty cheap with the trackpad.
Initial verdict
At its regular $529 retail price, the 8GB model is entering a territory where it has to compete with heavily discounted Chromebook Plus certified devices. However, Best Buy aggressively launched this laptop straight into a promotional cycle, and you can get it for just $399 right now. And the 4GB model is just $280.
If this machine routinely hovers in that $400 or less sweet spot, the gorgeous 400-nit screen and updated Kompanio processor make it an incredibly compelling value. We are moving this straight to the review process to see how that new MediaTek chip handles a true, multi-tab daily workflow, so stay tuned for our full review coming soon.
