The Google TV Streamer gets its first substantial discount

When Google launched the Google TV Streamer last year, it marked a big departure from the Chromecast lineup they’d been leveraging for years. The $99 price tag was a notable jump from Google’s previous streaming hardware, too, and the introduction of other streaming options with Google TV on board has spiked competition in the smart TV space of late.

With amazing options like the Onn Google TV 4K Pro out there for half the asking price of the Google TV Streamer, it feels almost overdue for Google to start pushing some deals on their in-house streamer to perhaps combat Walmart’s more-affordable strategy.

So, starting today, the Google TV Streamer is seeing its first major price drop, bringing it down to a much more palatable $79.99. This $20 discount represents a 20% saving off the standard $99.99 MSRP and gets it quite a bit closer to Walmart’s cheaper Onn streaming box. This is also the first time Google has officially sanctioned a discount for their primary streaming device.

We’ve had the Onn Google TV 4K Pro in the office for months at this point, and I never find myself wishing I had the Google TV Streamer instead. That’s no knock to Google’s far more attractive device, but instead a glowing admission that Onn nailed it with their top-end streamer.

Still, I know a ton of potential buyers want the device that is made by Google, and now it is a lot more interesting from a cost perspective. And if you plan on having the streamer out on a shelf and visible, I will admit that the Google TV Streamer strikes a far more attractive pose than the $50 Onn 4K Pro. As this is the first time we’ve seen a deal like this on the Google TV Streamer, there’s no telling how long it will actually last, so don’t miss it!
