Last week, I wrote a bit of an editorial piece that made the case that for the first time in years, a new, Google-made Pixelbook actually makes perfect sense thanks to the impending shift of ChromeOS to the Android kernel. It was a speculative, forward-looking article based on connecting a few dots that I thought I’d simply have a bit of fun with.
And then it went pretty crazy. It was viewed more than nearly every other post we’ve published this year; and what that tells me, loud and clear, is that the desire for a new, Made By Google Chromebook is still very real.
More than just nostalgia
For those who exist outside the Chromebook bubble, the passion for a new Pixelbook might seem a bit strange. But the incredible response to our post proves that this isn’t just a few old fans being nostalgic for the beloved original Pixelbook or Pixelbook Go. It’s a clear signal that there is a broad, hungry market for a premium ChromeOS device that is made by Google themselves.
People want to see Google put its full weight and design prowess behind a flagship laptop that perfectly embodies its software vision, just as it does with the Pixel phone lineup. The Pixelbook and Pixelbook Go set a standard for quality, design, and user experience that, in many ways, has yet to be matched. The massive traffic on a purely speculative post is the clearest possible market research Google could ask for.
People are still incredibly passionate about the idea of a new Pixelbook, and they are eagerly waiting for Google to step back into the ring. The enthusiasm is real. The demand is there. It’s just a question of if and a question of when. I still stand behind my hypothesis from last week that the Android Kernel introduction (likely at some point mid-2026 in my estimation) in the Chromebook world is just the event we need to see Google get back in the Chromebook hardware game. If there was any question that people are into it, I don’t think there’s any doubt.
