The spring tech season is officially heating up as Google has dropped its annual “Save the Date” puzzle for Google I/O 2026. This tradition is the starting gun for the most important week in the Google ecosystem, where we typically get our first look at the next version of Android, massive Workspace updates, and the future trajectory Google’s hardware ambitions. This year, the teaser carries the tagline “Make, Build, Unlock,” and it challenges the community to solve a series of mini-games to reveal the official conference dates.
True to the current state of Google’s product lineup, AI is front and center in the experience. The first phase of the puzzle is a mini-golf game where you aim shots and adjust power to navigate various obstacles. Adding a modern twist, a Gemini-powered caddy provides real-time feedback and commentary on your performance. It is a clever, interactive way to showcase the low-latency capabilities of Google’s latest models while keeping the developer community engaged.

A community-driven reveal
As is typical for these I/O teasers, the date isn’t just handed to you for completing a level. Google generally requires a specific threshold of global completions before the final “bonus” is unlocked for everyone.
In previous years, we have seen these puzzles range from light-bending simulations to complex logic gates. Starting things off with a mini-golf format with an AI assistant feels like a nod to the “Agentic Era” Google has been championing lately. It suggests that while I/O remains a developer-focused event, the focus for 2026 will be heavily weighted toward making AI tools more interactive and conversational in everyday applications.
What to expect from I/O 2026
While the puzzle is a fun distraction, the real excitement lies in what these dates will eventually reveal. We are expecting I/O 2026 to be the stage where Project “Aluminium” – the initiative to merge the ChromeOS and Android stacks – takes its most significant step forward yet. With the recent info surrounding ‘Ruby’ and ‘Sapphire’ hardware, we are eager to see if Google will use this developer stage to formally announce the new high-end hardware standards for this unified vision.
Historically, I/O takes place in mid-May at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, and if the puzzle-solving pace remains consistent with previous years, we should have the official confirmation by the end of the day. If you want to help speed up the process, head over to the I/O site and start sinking those putts.
