For years, Walmart has stood as the single biggest holdout against NFC-based tap-to-pay in the United States. While nearly every other major retailer adopted contactless payments, Walmart insisted on funneling customers through its proprietary, QR-code-based Walmart Pay app. Thank goodness, that era is officially coming to an end.
According to a new post over at News from Google, tap to pay with Google Pay is coming to Walmart and Sam’s Club locations across the U.S. The rollout begins next week, ending a multi-year standoff and bringing true tap-to-pay convenience to thousands of stores nationwide.
The rollout timeline and what to expect
According to Google’s official announcement, the transition won’t happen overnight across every single register, but the timeline is moving fast:
- Initial Launch (Starting Monday, August 24, 2026): Contactless tap to pay using Google Pay begins rolling out at select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations in the U.S.
- Full Nationwide In-Store Support (By End of 2026): Google and Walmart plan to have tap-to-pay active across all U.S. Walmart stores and Sam’s Club warehouses before the year wraps up.
- Walmart Fuel Stations (By Mid-2027): Contactless payment support will extend to Walmart and Murphy USA gas station pumps by the middle of next year.
Why Walmart held out for so long
To appreciate why this announcement is such a big deal, you have to look at why Walmart resisted contactless NFC terminals for over a decade.
When you use Google Wallet/Google Pay on your Android phone, smartwatch, or Wear OS device, the transaction uses tokenization. Your actual credit or debit card number is masked and never handed over directly to the merchant terminal.
Walmart preferred its proprietary Walmart Pay system because scanning a QR code inside the Walmart app allowed the company to keep transaction tracking and customer purchasing habits tied directly inside its own internal ecosystem.
However, customer muscle memory and convenience have clearly won out. After watching competitors like Target, Kroger, and The Home Depot reverse course and embrace tap-to-pay, Walmart is finally modernizing its checkout experience to meet shoppers where they already are.
For those who still prefer the existing methods, Walmart will continue supporting cash, physical credit/debit cards, and Walmart Pay side by side. But for anyone who has ever left their physical wallet in the car or simply prefers the speed and security of a quick wrist-tap at the register, this is a massive and long-overdue victory.
