If you’re a regular user of Google Messages, there’s a part of the UI that’s been wildly frustrating to use for a very long time: the restrictive 4-line limit in the text box that scrolls the rest of your message out of view. This made drafting longer messages, or even just sharing URLs (which can easily consume multiple lines), a frustrating experience requiring constant scrolling to review the beginning of your text.
Thankfully, the fix is here with the latest Google Messages beta (version 20250409_01_RC00), and we’re seeing a big expansion of this text field. The input box now accommodates up to 14 lines of text before scrolling begins, and it feels so much easier to use. This generous increase should provide ample space for users to see the entirety of their message composition without interruption, making the drafting process much smoother.
Currently, this expanded text field is limited to the beta channel; devices I’ve checked running the stable version of Google Messages today still retain the older 4-line limit. It seems likely that Google waited until the foundation of the redesigned compose box to be firmly in place before introducing this expanded capacity.
Hopefully, this means we’ll start seeing the 14-line limit hitting the stable version of Google Messages before too long. Other than this limitation, there are few gripes I have with this app, and I’m very glad to see this particular frustration eradicated with the latest update for sure.
