Google’s NotebookLM continues to evolve as a powerful AI research assistant, and the latest update significantly expands the reach of one of its most compelling features: Audio Overviews. Following its expansion to over 200 countries last year, NotebookLM is now rolling out support for over 50 languages in its Audio Overviews feature.
For those unfamiliar, Audio Overviews transform your source documents into engaging, podcast-like summaries. This feature quickly became a fan favorite when introduced, offering a unique and effective way to digest complex information. We’ve covered NotebookLM’s impressive capabilities before and I’m always blown away by how good it is at turning dense research into easy-to-listen-to conversations.
This latest enhancement leverages the native audio support within Google’s Gemini models, allowing Audio Overviews to be generated in a wide array of languages, from Afrikaans and Hindi to Spanish and Turkish, among many others. It’s a significant step in making NotebookLM a more globally accessible tool.
How to turn on more languages
Activating the feature is straightforward. A new “Output Language” option is available in NotebookLM’s settings. Simply select your preferred language, and all subsequent Audio Overviews and chat responses will be generated in that language. Users can switch languages anytime, which is particularly useful for creating multilingual content or study materials.
Imagine a scenario where a teacher is preparing a lesson on desert climates. They might gather resources like a documentary in a Saharan language, a research paper in French, and study reports in English. Students can upload these diverse sources into NotebookLM and generate a cohesive Audio Overview summarizing key insights in their own native language. This ability effectively breaks down language barriers, making information more accessible and useful for everyone.
Google notes that this is still an early implementation, and they plan to continue refining the multi-language capabilities based on user feedback. It’s encouraging to see Google invest in making powerful AI tools like NotebookLM available to a much wider audience, helping more people connect with and understand information in the language they’re most comfortable with.
