Not dead just yet: the Chromecast may still have life left in it after all

After mourning the death of the final Chromecast-branded devices not long ago as the Google TV Streamer took their place, it looks like the Chromecast brand may not be dead after all. The official word from Google on this was pretty clear: production of Chromecast devices would cease, and once existing stock dwindled, that would be it. However, as is often the case with these sorts of things, the story isn’t quite that simple.

While the Google TV Streamer represents the future of Google’s streaming hardware, its availability is not quite global. Currently, it graces shelves in only 19 countries, and Google has indicated that expansion into new markets isn’t on the immediate roadmap. This leaves a significant portion of the world, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, without access to the latest streaming device.

Specifically, countries like India, Singapore, Taiwan, and Malaysia, among others in the APAC region, will miss out on the Streamer; and there’s a reason why. Google’s VP of Devices and Services for APAC, Mike Abary, suggests that the prevalence of affordable smart TVs with integrated streaming capabilities plays a significant role in the decision.

In these regions, Android TV OS (the version that comes bundled in any given television) has enjoyed considerable popularity, boasting over 50% market share in 2022. This widespread adoption of built-in streaming solutions likely diminishes the perceived need for a standalone, high-end streaming device like the Google TV Streamer.

So, where does this leave the Chromecast? Surprisingly, Google has stated that it has “no immediate plans to discontinue” the Chromecast in these regions. This revelation raises some interesting questions. While the Google Store in some of these countries has already ceased selling the Chromecast, third-party retailers like Flipkart continue to offer it. This suggests that while Google may not be actively replenishing stock in its own stores, the device will remain available through other channels.

The implications are clear, though; the Chromecast, once thought to be headed for total obsolescence, will continue to serve as a viable streaming option for consumers in select markets. Whether Google will eventually resume production to meet demand remains to be seen. But for now, the Chromecast’s story has an unexpected epilogue.
