Last year, Google’s Nano Banana model took the internet by storm, followed quickly by the powerhouse Nano Banana Pro for those needing studio-quality control. Today, Google is merging those two worlds with the release of Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image).

The goal here is simple: give users the advanced world knowledge and creative reasoning of the Pro model but at the “Flash” speeds we’ve come to expect from Google’s more efficient AI tiers.

Intelligence and visual quality at Flash speed

The biggest upgrade in Nano Banana 2 is the integration of Gemini’s real-world knowledge base. Unlike basic generators that just guess what things look like, this model is powered by real-time information and images from web search. This means it can more accurately render specific, real-world subjects and even help create complex diagrams, infographics, and data visualizations.

Google is also highlighting a major fix for a common AI pain point: text rendering. Nano Banana 2 features precision text rendering and translation, making it a legitimate tool for creating marketing mockups or greeting cards that are actually legible.

Enhanced creative control

Beyond the speed, Google has managed to bake in several features that were previously exclusive to the Pro version:

  • Subject consistency: You can now maintain the resemblance of up to five characters and 14 different objects across a single workflow. This is a game-changer for anyone trying to storyboard or build a narrative without the characters changing their look in every frame.
  • Precise instruction following: The model is much better at adhering to complex, nuanced prompts. If you ask for a specific detail, it’s far more likely to actually show up in the final render.
  • Production-ready specs: You have full control over aspect ratios and resolutions ranging from 512px all the way up to 4K. Whether you’re making a vertical TikTok background or a 4K widescreen backdrop, the fidelity stays sharp.

Where you can find it

Nano Banana 2 is rolling out today and will become the new default image model across several Google products. It’s replacing the previous models in the Gemini app for most users, though Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers will still be able to force the Pro model for specialized tasks via the three-dot menu. You’ll also see it popping up in Google Search (via AI Mode and Lens), AI Studio, Vertex AI, and even within Google Ads to help power campaign suggestions.
