A few years back, Google made the move of announcing new features for Pixel phones in what they dubbed ‘Pixel Feature Drops.’ It was a handy way to tell users that the latest update was more than security fixes and squashed bugs. Last year, Google dropped ‘feature’ from the soft branding of these updates, and we now just have ‘Pixel Drops’ when new features hit Google’s in-house phones.
This idea is now expanding beyond Pixel phones, and Google is bringing it to the Workspace suite. This latest Workspace Feature Drop focuses on new features that make research and analysis simpler with AI, and it highlights several significant AI-driven enhancements designed to streamline workflows and boost productivity.
AI in Sheets
A key development is the integration of powerful AI analytical tools within Google Sheets. Gemini, leveraging advanced multi-step code generation, can now generate deeper insights into data, identifying contextual trends, patterns, and correlations. This goes beyond simple calculations, offering users the ability to visualize complex data through advanced chart types like heatmaps.

For example, a marketing manager can now ask Gemini to analyze campaign performance and generate a chart highlighting the top three performing channels based on conversion rates. Similarly, a financial analyst can identify anomalies in inventory levels or predict net income for upcoming quarters. These capabilities empower users to uncover valuable insights and make data-driven decisions more efficiently.
Alongside these AI enhancements, Google has also improved the performance of everyday Sheets actions. Users can expect up to a 50% increase in paste speeds when copying data between spreadsheets, faster filter menu loading for large datasets, and up to a 30% quicker opening time for existing spreadsheets.
NotebookLM is now a core Workspace service
Beyond Sheets, NotebookLM, an AI-powered research assistant, is now a core Workspace service. This tool enables teams to accelerate learning and uncover insights by analyzing various sources, including documents, PDFs, Google Drive files, videos, and audio recordings. NotebookLM acts as a centralized knowledge hub, allowing teams to stay informed with AI-generated podcasts and audio overviews.

Gemini Deep Research availability
Gemini Deep Research, another significant addition, is now fully available to Workspace customers. This feature explores complex topics, generating comprehensive reports within minutes. Users can review and refine research plans, allowing Gemini to analyze information from across the web. The resulting reports, which can be exported to Google Docs, include links to original sources, facilitating further exploration.

Enhanced Drive video capabilities
Finally, Google Drive has enhanced its video capabilities with searchable video transcripts. Building on the existing automatic caption generation, users can now search video transcripts for keywords and phrases. The transcript appears in a sidebar next to the video player, highlighting the currently spoken text. This makes it easier to find specific moments within videos and access relevant information.

Clearly, Google is committed to integrating AI into its Workspace suite on a deeper level to give users the powerful tools they need for research, analysis, and collaboration. How often we’ll get these new Workspace Feature Drops isn’t clear just yet, but I’d expect to see them every couple of months to keep us all abreast of the sheer volume of new stuff being added to Google’s core business tools.
