For years, we’ve enjoyed a period of cheap RAM and storage. It’s what allowed the Chromebook Plus initiative to flourish, giving us 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage as a baseline that began at $599 or less. But if you’ve looked at component prices lately, you know that the party might be coming to a crashing halt.
Thanks to the insatiable demand for AI data centers, RAM and SSD prices are currently skyrocketing, and it’s only a matter of time before those costs hit the Chromebooks on your local Best Buy shelf.
The “AI Tax” on Components
The data coming out of the PC building world is pretty concerning. According to a recent report from Ars Technica, some RAM kits have seen a 4x price increase since just this past August. SSDs aren’t faring much better, with some drives doubling in price over the last few months.
Why is this happening? It’s simple: AI. Giant data centers from companies like Google, OpenAI, and Meta are gobbling up every high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chip and high-density SSD they can find. Manufacturers like Micron and Samsung are shifting their production lines away from “consumer” parts to focus on these high-margin AI chips, leaving the rest of the market in a massive supply squeeze.
The First Dominoes are Falling
We aren’t just guessing that this will affect laptops; it’s already happening.
- Dell has reportedly begun hiking prices on its commercial PCs by 10–30% as of mid-December 2025.
- Lenovo, HP, Acer, and ASUS have all issued similar warnings, with price increases of 15–20% expected to hit by the first quarter of 2026.
When the big PC manufacturers start “resetting contracts” and raising prices across the board, Chromebooks aren’t immune. In fact, because Chromebook margins are so thin, they are often the most vulnerable to component price hikes.
What this means for Chromebooks in 2026
We’ve spent the last two years celebrating the fact that 8GB of RAM has finally become the standard. However, analysts are now warning that we might see a “downmix” in 2026. To keep prices low, manufacturers may be forced to raise prices; meaning that $599 Chromebook Plus you’ve been eyeing could easily jump to $649 or 6499 just to cover the cost of the memory.
Our Advice: Don’t Wait
If you’ve been waiting for “the next big thing” or a 2026 model to drop, you might want to reconsider. Most of the inventory currently in stores was built using components purchased before this late-2025 price spike.
If you see a deal on an 8GB or 16GB Chromebook Plus right now, grab it. Between the AI boom and the predicted shortages lasting well into 2026, the “budget” laptop might be about to get a lot less budget-friendly.
