As the frustrating YouTube TV vs. Disney blackout continues with no end in sight, Google is now making good on its promise to offer compensation. Subscribers are beginning to receive notifications that the $20 credit for the “extended period” without channels like ESPN and ABC is now available. However, the execution here is a bit lame, and the offer itself isn’t much better if this spat continues.
First, Google’s message to subscribers makes it clear that this is a “one-time $20.00 credit”. This isn’t a recurring discount for each month the channels are gone; it’s a single, one-off payment, which is a pretty big letdown for subscribers facing a potentially long-term blackout.
Second, and perhaps more frustratingly, for most users, this credit isn’t automatic. You actually have to go and manually claim it in YouTube TV’s settings on the web. Sure, it’s a one-click solution, but the fact that we have to hunt down this credit in settings is pretty ridiculous. Anyway, here’s how to get it.
How to claim your $20 YouTube TV credit
If you pay for YouTube TV directly, you’ll need to follow these steps to get your credit:
- Go to the YouTube TV website in a browser.
- Click your profile image in the top-right corner and go to Settings.
- At the very bottom of the menu, click on the “Updates” page (or just go directly to
tv.youtube.com/settings/service_updates). - You should see a section titled “Disney Content” that explains the situation.
- Click the blue “Claim credit” button and the $20 will then be applied to your next bill.
The only exception is for users who are billed via Google Play or another third-party provider. For those users, Google states the credit “will be applied to your account automatically”.
While $20 is better than nothing, the fact that Google is issuing the credit at all means we’re not close to the end of this mess. For now, you’re still out 21 channels (including ESPN, ABC, FX, and Disney Channel), and you have to go hunt for a button just to get your one-time partial refund. Not great.
