Google’s Chief Product Officer teases a Google Home Speaker announcement coming this week

The wait for Google’s next-generation smart speaker appears to be coming to an end very soon. In an email sent out last week to participants of the Gemini for Home early access program, Google strongly hinted that a Google Home Speaker announcement is just days away. The email, authored by Anish Kattukaran, Chief Product Officer for Google Home and Nest, primarily served as an update and thank you to everyone who tested the new Gemini for Home program, but it ended with a very clear teaser regarding the highly anticipated Gemini-powered smart speaker.

Fueled by early access feedback

Before dropping the hardware hint, Kattukaran outlined the scale of the Gemini for Home testing phase. Since the early access program launched last October, over 3.5 million users have opted in to test the new conversational assistant. Google used this massive testing pool to establish a direct line of communication with its engineering team, fundamentally shifting the assistant from a rigid command processor into a much more intuitive conversational assistant.

According to Kattukaran, that direct user feedback has directly fueled a rapid development cycle. Google has pushed regular updates on an almost bi-weekly basis, implementing over 2,500 bug fixes and expanding the Gemini for Home experience to 20 countries across 10 different languages. The underlying system is now significantly more responsive and capable of handling highly complex requests. To date, the engineering team has rolled out over 50 major feature updates, including the highly requested return of Continued Conversation and upgraded media controls, all leveraging the latest Gemini models.

Beyond improving the core conversational capabilities of Gemini, the development team has also focused heavily on the underlying Google Home infrastructure. Kattukaran noted that the Google Home app itself has been optimized for speed, alongside enhancements to the overall camera experience. The team has also expanded the platform’s automation capabilities and deployed new partner tools designed specifically to improve the reliability of third-party smart home devices connected to the ecosystem.

The Google Home Speaker should arrive this week

While the software metrics are impressive, the most compelling part of the update was tucked away at the very end of the email. In a postscript note, Kattukaran explicitly told users who have been patiently waiting for a “certain speaker” to keep a very close eye on their inbox next week.

Because that email was sent out to testers last week, that “next week” timeline is officially right now. Given the rapidly depleting retail stock of older Nest Audio and Nest Mini devices we recently covered, this teaser all but confirms that Google is finally ready to unveil its first new smart speaker in years. With Gemini for Home now thoroughly tested and refined, the stage is perfectly set for the hardware specifically built to run it. If this timeline holds true, we should expect an official announcement to go live at some point this week!
