If you’ve ever sat in a Google Meet call on a beautiful 4K monitor or a high-resolution Chromebook Plus display and wondered why everyone’s image looked a little soft, Google has some good news for you. A new update is rolling out that specifically optimizes video quality for high-resolution screens on the web and in meeting rooms.
This change is designed to provide sharper, more detailed video feeds, which is especially noticeable in larger meetings with three or more participants where those individual video tiles can often lose a lot of clarity.
Bandwidth vs. quality
Better video quality requires a bit more heavy lifting. Google notes that to serve these higher-resolution streams, Meet will use additional bandwidth.

The good news is that you don’t have to worry about your call dropping if your internet isn’t perfect. Meet is designed to be intelligent here; it will automatically adjust the resolution back down if it detects that your device is bandwidth-constrained. It’s a win-win: you get the best possible picture your connection can handle without having to dig through settings.
Coming soon for admins
While the visual upgrade is rolling out now, Google is also working on tools for the people behind the scenes. In the coming months, Admin console settings will be updated to allow organizations to control the default video quality and bandwidth usage across their entire domain. This will be a great way for IT teams to balance video fidelity with network stability.
Availability
The rollout for this feature is an extended one, so it may take more than 15 days to show up for everyone. It is available to:
- All Google Workspace customers
- Workspace Individual subscribers
- Users with personal Google accounts
If you’re on a high-resolution display, keep an eye on your next huddle—things are about to look a whole lot clearer.
