We have all felt the pain: you’re in a Google Meet call, and the chat is flying. People are dropping important links, key bits of feedback, and helpful resources. You make a mental note to copy everything before you leave, but the meeting ends, you click the red “hang up” button, and… poof! All of that valuable information vanishes into the ether, gone forever.
It’s been one of the biggest frustrations with Google Meet for years, but starting November 10, that is finally changing. In a massive and long-overdue update, Google has announced that in-meeting messages in Google Meet will now be powered by and available in Google Chat.

Your meeting chat is no longer temporary
This is a fundamental shift in how Meet works, and it’s a massive win for productivity. Here’s what it means for you:
- No More Lost Messages: Any key resources, links, or feedback shared during the meeting will be easily accessible after the meeting in a shared Google Chat conversation.
- A Pre-Meeting Hub: You can now send pre-reads, agendas, and other materials to the group in that same Google Chat thread before the meeting even starts. Those resources will then be available in Meet throughout the call.
- Chat Features in Meet: This integration also brings the power of Google Chat into the Meet experience. You’ll now be able to respond to messages with emojis and share images and files directly in the meeting chat.
- A Single Source: This change consolidates all your messaging and conversations into Google Chat, making it easy to find everything in one place.
How it Works
This new “continuous meeting chat” isn’t just a free-for-all. Google has built in the necessary controls for hosts and administrators:
- Host Control: Meeting hosts retain full control. They can disable this feature for any specific meeting by toggling an option in the Google Calendar event’s video call settings before the meeting starts. This cannot be changed once the meeting is in progress.
- Admin Rules: The new chat respects all existing Google Chat retention policies and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) rules your organization has set up.
- External Attendees: For security, external guests will only have access to the chat during the time they are in the meeting. They won’t see the pre-meeting conversation or have access to the history after they leave.
This new integration is available for most Google Workspace business and enterprise customers and will begin its extended rollout on November 10, 2025. It’s a fantastic update that bridges the gap between real-time meetings and ongoing collaboration.
