Google is surprisingly investing up to $40 billion in Claude creator Anthropic

In a move that perfectly illustrates the “frenemy” dynamic of the modern tech industry, Google is preparing a massive financial investment into Anthropic, the AI startup famous for the Claude family of models. According to Bloomberg (via 9to5 Google), this deal is structured in phases and is tied heavily to Anthropic hitting specific developmental milestones.

Seriously funding a major rival

The financial commitment from Alphabet is broken into two distinct parts:

  • The Initial Injection: Google is committing $10 billion in cash up front. This maintains Anthropic’s current valuation at an eye-watering $350 billion.
  • The Performance Bonus: If Anthropic successfully hits certain “performance targets,” Google will invest an additional $30 billion, bringing the total potential package to $40 billion.

On the surface, it seems counterintuitive for Google to fund the company building Claude, especially when Claude Opus models are currently dominating the AI coding space and an area Google explicitly wants to win. However, this investment is a strategic masterstroke for Google’s infrastructure business.

As 9to5Google points out, Anthropic is already a massive customer of Google Cloud. A huge portion of this $40 billion investment will be used to support a “significant expansion” of Anthropic’s computing capacity. In short, Google is giving Anthropic the money it needs to buy more server time on Google Cloud infrastructure. It ensures that as Claude scales, Google’s cloud division profits.

Access to the ‘Mythos’ model

Beyond the cloud infrastructure play, this partnership grants Google exclusive insights. The report notes that Google is one of the few entities with access to Anthropic’s unreleased Mythos model. This model is currently considered too powerful and/or potentially too dangerous for a wide public release. Having a front-row seat to Anthropic’s most cutting-edge research allows Google to keep a close eye on the absolute frontier of generative AI capabilities.

As we heard at Cloud Next just a few days ago, Google is pivoting hard into the Agentic Era. By securing a massive stake in Anthropic, Alphabet is ensuring that whether the future is powered by Gemini or by Claude, Google’s underlying infrastructure will be the engine running the show.
