Google has long offered a robust backup solution for Android that covers everything from your app list and call history to your SMS messages and device settings. However, there has always been a lingering, somewhat frustrating omission: the local Downloads folder. While your photos and videos are safely tucked away in Google Photos and your settings are synced to the cloud, any PDF, invoice, or ticket you’ve downloaded to your phone has historically been one factory reset away from permanent deletion.
According to the latest release notes for Google Play services (v26.06) via 9to5 Google, that is finally changing. Google is introducing a new local file backup feature that will automatically save your downloaded documents to Google Drive.
A safety net for mobile devices
If you’ve ever used the Google Drive for desktop app on a Mac or PC, the concept here will feel very familiar. The desktop client allows you to designate specific local folders to be continuously backed up to the cloud. This new Android feature appears to apply that same logic to the mobile Download directory.
The official notes state that this will allow users to “automatically save your downloaded documents to Google Drive, ensuring they are safe and accessible from any of your devices.” While we are still waiting for the full UI to roll out to all users, the intent is clear: Google wants your local files to have the same level of persistence as your cloud-based ones.
Rollout and Availability
This feature is arriving as part of the February 2026 Google System Updates. Like most Play services additions, this will likely be a phased, server-side rollout. Once it hits your device, you should see a new toggle under your Google Backup settings specifically for local files.
It is worth noting that while this acts as a backup, early reports suggest it may be a “snapshot” style backup rather than a live, two-way sync. This means it creates a copy in Drive to protect your data, but it might not necessarily sync every single edit back and forth in real-time. Regardless, it is a massive quality-of-life improvement that ensures your important documents aren’t orphaned on a single device.
