The homepage in Google Drive is a fantastic, underrated feature for quickly finding the files you’re most likely to need. With AI-powered suggestions that are usually spot-on, Google Drive makes life with lots of files a bit easier on a daily basis; but you still have to click into each document to remember exactly what’s inside.
In a smart new update, Google is making that process even more efficient. According to a new post on the Workspace Updates blog, you will now see Gemini-powered summaries directly on the suggested files surfaced on your Drive Home page.
Get the gist without opening the file
This is a huge time-saver. As you scroll through your suggested files list on the Drive Home page, you’ll now see a short, AI-generated summary right on the file card for select Docs, Sheets, Slides, and PDFs. This allows you to get the gist of a document’s content at a glance, without ever having to open it.

If you need a bit more context, you can simply hover over the file and click the “See more” button to view a more in-depth analysis. From there, you can even open the full Gemini side panel to ask follow-up questions about the file. It’s a brilliant way to make the file discovery process faster and more context-aware.
Rollout and availability
This new feature will be on by default for all eligible users and is part of a gradual rollout that started on September 4th. It’s available to most paid Workspace subscribers, Google AI Pro for Education users, and Google One AI Premium subscribers.
It’s another fantastic example of Google using its powerful AI to remove a little more friction from our daily workflows, and it makes the Drive Home page a more powerful and useful starting point than ever.
