Google Classroom’s latest Gemini trick can automatically convert your existing rubrics

Google continues its push to embed helpful AI directly into educator workflows within Google Classroom. Following recent additions like content generation and the ability to create Read Along stories, the latest Gemini-powered feature tackles another common and often tedious task: adapting existing rubrics for Classroom assignments. Instead of having to manually recreate rubrics criterion by criterion, educators can now leverage Gemini to do the heavy lifting.

Convert rubrics from Drive or local files instantly

Available starting today, a new option appears in the Rubric menu when creating an assignment in Google Classroom: “Convert from file.” Selecting this allows educators to upload an existing rubric document – whether it’s stored in Google Drive or as a local file on their computer.

Gemini then takes over, intelligently parsing the file and automatically converting its contents into a properly formatted Google Classroom rubric. This eliminates the need for manual data entry, saving educators significant time and effort, and making it much easier to reuse valuable assessment tools they’ve already created.

Important Details

This rubric conversion tool is part of the broader Gemini in Google Classroom feature set. As with other Gemini features in Classroom, it’s currently available only in English and for education users over the age of 18.

The feature is rolling out now and should be fully available to users on all Google Workspace Education editions (Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus) within the next few days. It’s another smart, practical application of AI designed to streamline common tasks and give educators more time back in their day.
