Just last week, we saw Google begin the wider rollout of impressive new visual capabilities for Gemini Live; specifically allowing Gemini Advanced subscribers to use their camera or share their screen for real-time interaction. It was a tangible step towards the impressive ‘Project Astra’ vision demoed at Google I/O last May; and now, in a surprisingly generous move, Google is bringing these powerful features to everyone.

Announced today on the Gemini X account, the requirement for a Gemini Advanced subscription to use the live camera and screen sharing features is being dropped. Instead, these capabilities will be rolling out free for all Android users over the coming weeks.

This is a significant democratization of what feels like next-level AI interaction. If you missed the initial rollout details, Gemini Live now allows you to have a conversation with the AI about what’s currently displayed on your phone’s screen or visible through your camera. Here’s how it all works:

  • Screen Sharing: Launching this is quite seamless. When you invoke the Gemini overlay (usually by swiping up from a corner or pressing the power button, depending on your setup), you’ll see a new chip prompting you to “Share screen with Live.” A quick tap and confirmation, and you’re good to go. Pulling down the notification shade gives you an easy “Stop sharing” option at any time.
  • Camera Sharing: To use your camera, you’ll need to open the full-screen Gemini Live interface. There, you’ll find a new camera icon, and tapping this button brings up a viewfinder where you can easily switch between the rear and front-facing cameras to share what you see with Gemini and ask questions about literally anything.

The speed at which Google is moving these Project Astra-powered features from a paid tier to the free experience is pretty wild. It follows a similar pattern we saw last month when the experimental version of the powerful Gemini 2.5 Pro model was made available to free users as well. It seems Google is keen on getting its most advanced AI tools into the hands of as many users as possible, so be on the lookout for this new, amazing feature hit your Gemini app soon.
