In a surprising development, Google has announced the immediate roll-out of its cutting-edge Gemini 2.5 Pro (experimental) model to all Gemini app users, regardless of subscription status. This move, revealed on a Saturday afternoon, significantly expands access to what Google touts as its “most intelligent AI model,” a platform designed with integrated thinking capabilities.

Just days before, Gemini 2.5 Pro was unveiled as a premium offering, exclusively available to Gemini Advanced subscribers through the $19.99 per month Google One AI Premium plan. Now, Google is shifting gears, aiming to place this powerful tool into the hands of a broader audience. The experimental model, already accessible on gemini.google.com and soon to be integrated into Android and iOS apps, includes features like apps/Extensions, file uploads, and the recently added Canvas functionality.

This decision fits in line with Google’s ongoing commitment to democratizing access to sophisticated AI technologies. Currently, Gemini 2.5 Pro (experimental) holds the top position on the LMArena leaderboard and demonstrates leading performance in math and science benchmarks. Furthermore, Google is actively working to enhance its coding capabilities.

While the experimental phase is now open to all, the future of the stable 2.5 Pro model going out to all users remains uncertain. Previously, Google had indicated that 2.0 Flash Thinking and 2.0 Flash would be the standard offerings for free users. However, recent months have seen a steady expansion of free features, including Deep Research, Gems, Saved info, document upload/analysis, and image generation of people.

The key differentiator for Advanced subscribers now rests primarily on the 1 million token context window and higher usage limits. Whether Google will continue this trend of broadening free access or revert to a more tiered approach remains to be seen. So far, when the latest features for Gemini trickle down to the free tier, more good stuff is on the way. I’m sure whatever is next will be upon us very soon.
