When Google announced “Gemini in Chrome” on the way for Workspace users back in November, it was a huge deal for the platform. It promised to finally bring Chromebooks to feature parity with Mac and Windows, delivering a deeply integrated, enterprise-grade AI assistant right in the browser. But there was one big question left unanswered: When was it actually set to arrive?

At the time, Google simply said it was “coming soon.” Now, thanks to an update on an official Google support page, we finally have a concrete timeline. Gemini in Chrome will begin rolling out to Chromebook Plus devices starting with ChromeOS 144.

Mark your calendars for January

According to the Chromium release schedule, ChromeOS 144 is slated to arrive in late January 2026. That means Enterprise and Education users – and hopefully general consumers on Chromebook Plus as well – are only weeks away from getting this massive upgrade.

Why this is a big deal

If you need a refresher, “Gemini in Chrome” isn’t just a bookmark to the Gemini website. It is a powerful, context-aware assistant that lives in your browser’s side panel.

  • It knows what you’re looking at: You can ask Gemini to summarize the specific page you are on or clarify complex topics without leaving your tab.
  • It connects the dots: It can look at multiple open tabs to compare products, summarize research, or hunt down specific details across different sites.
  • It’s ready for business: For Workspace users, this update brings the conversational Gemini Live interface and, perhaps most importantly, integration with Cameyo. This means Gemini will be able to “see” and interact with legacy Windows apps running virtually in the browser, bridging the gap between old software and cutting-edge AI.

After a few months of watching Mac and Windows users get access to a Gemini feature that felt like it should have hit ChromeOS first, it is good to know that the wait is almost over. Keep an eye out for the update next month!
