Chrome is officially moving beyond the era of simple AI helpers and into the era of AI agents. In a massive new announcement today, Parisa Tabriz, VP of Chrome, detailed a huge wave of updates coming to the browser on MacOS, Windows, and Chromebook Plus. Powered by the new Gemini 3 model, Chrome is transitioning from a tool you use to browse the web into a partner that can actually perform tasks on your behalf.

Multitasking with the new Side Panel

The most immediate change users will notice is the new Gemini side panel. Designed to eliminate the constant “tab-switching” fatigue, this persistent assistant stays with you regardless of which page you are on.

Google says testers have already been using the side panel to summarize complex product reviews across multiple sites or find open slots in chaotic calendars while keeping their primary work front and center. It’s a reimagining of multitasking that turns the browser into a collaborative workspace.

Introducing “Auto Browse” – your personal web agent

The headline feature for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S. is Chrome Auto Browse. While we’ve had autofill for years to handle addresses and credit cards, Auto Browse takes things to a “Pro” level of agency. It can handle multi-step logistics that used to take humans hours to coordinate. According to Google, Auto Browse can:

  • Plan entire vacations: It can research hotel and flight costs across multiple dates to find the best budget window.
  • Handle mundane chores: Testers are using it to schedule appointments, fill out tedious online forms, collect tax documents, and even renew driver’s licenses.
  • Complex Shopping: If you show Auto Browse an inspiration photo for a party, it can identify the items, find them within your budget, apply discount codes, and add them to your cart. It can even handle sign-ins via Google Password Manager.

Creativity and Connected Apps

Chrome is also getting a direct injection of Nano Banana, Google’s viral image editing model. You can now transform images directly in the browser window using text prompts without ever needing to download, edit, and re-upload a file.

Furthermore, the integration with “Connected Apps” is deepening. Gemini in Chrome can now cross-reference your Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and Maps. For example, it can find a conference confirmation in your email, check Google Flights for a return trip, and then draft an update to your colleagues: all from the side panel.

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)

In a move that signals the future of how we buy things online, Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). This is a new open standard co-developed with industry giants like Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, and Target.

UCP ensures that AI agents can navigate different storefronts and take actions seamlessly on your behalf. This is the foundation for a web where you tell your browser what you want, and the agent handles the transaction across various retailers without you ever having to navigate a checkout flow yourself.

Security in the age of agents

Entrusting an AI to handle purchases and personal data requires high-level security. Google has introduced “entirely new defenses” to protect against AI-specific online threats. For added peace of mind, Auto Browse is designed to pause and ask for explicit confirmation before performing sensitive actions, such as making a final purchase or posting to social media.

All told, this update represents the biggest leap in Chrome’s functionality in years. We are moving toward a context-aware browser that doesn’t just show you the web, but understands your goals and helps you achieve them. As these features start showing up on our Chromebook Plus devices, we’ll be diving deeper into each of them to see if these new abilities are fun bar tricks or truly game-changing upgrades to our favorite browser.
