ChromeOS 152 is rolling out now, bringing automatic PWA link capture and key security tweaks

Following Google’s recent push of Chrome 152 across desktop platforms, the primary system update for Chromebooks has officially arrived as well. According to an update on the Chrome Releases blog, Google has begun pushing ChromeOS 152 (specifically version 16765.41.0, running browser version 152.0.7977.113) to the Stable channel for the majority of ChromeOS and ChromeOS Flex devices.

Over on tracking hubs like cros.tech, most hardware boards are actively receiving the update, though a few popular models are taking their usual pause. Notably, boards like ‘Navi’ (Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14) and ‘Hylia’ (Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514) haven’t been bumped up to ChromeOS 152 just yet. Both machines trailed behind by a day or two during the last update as well, so I’d wager owners of those devices should see the prompt land before the week wraps up.

While this release serves largely as an under-the-hood polish ahead of autumn hardware showcases, Google’s Enterprise and Education notes reveal several key quality-of-life adjustments and infrastructure shifts worth knowing about.

Automatic navigation capturing for PWAs

The most practical everyday upgrade in ChromeOS 152 centers on how the system handles Progressive Web Apps (PWAs).

In previous versions of ChromeOS, clicking a shared link or search result that corresponded to an installed web app would often default to opening a new tab in the standard browser window, unless you manually dug into app settings and configured link-capturing preferences.

Starting in ChromeOS 152, that process is completely automated. All installed PWAs now capture and handle their associated outbound links by default. If you click a link corresponding to an installed workspace tool, project board, or media service, the operating system routes the URL straight into that standalone app window, making the desktop web app ecosystem feel considerably more native and integrated.

Post-Quantum Cryptography for components and extensions

On the security side, ChromeOS 152 initiates a foundational cryptographic transition. Across desktop and mobile platforms, Google is upgrading component and extension delivery from classical digital signatures (ECDSA) to Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC).

While this won’t visually alter your desktop interface, it ensures that background updates for browser components and extensions are shielded against potential quantum computing decryption threats down the line. Kinda crazy that we have to start thinking about those types of things now, right?

Enterprise upgrades: Google Certificate Authority Connector

For IT administrators managing fleets of devices in schools and enterprises, ChromeOS 152 introduces native support for the Google Certificate Authority Connector.

Previously limited to Windows, Mac, and Linux environments, this tool allows Google Cloud to function directly as a customer-specific certificate authority for Chrome browser users on ChromeOS. It significantly streamlines credential enrollment, letting organizations issue and validate custom enterprise certificates without relying on complex, external third-party proxies.

The upcoming release numbering shakeup

Tucked away inside the documentation for ChromeOS 152 is an important roadmap notice regarding how version numbers will work moving forward.

Because Google shifted the desktop Chrome browser to a faster 2-week release cadence to ship security fixes faster, the version numbers between the browser and the operating system began to drift apart. To fix that misalignment, Google confirmed that starting with ChromeOS 154, the platform will continue releasing every four weeks as usual, but the version numbers will increment by two instead of one.

For enterprise environments on the Long-Term Support (LTS) channel, the actual six-month deployment frequency remains unchanged, but future LTS builds will jump by 12 version milestones to match the new numbering convention.

How to check for the update

If you want to see if your Chromebook is ready to jump to ChromeOS 152:

1. Open your Settings app.
2. Click About ChromeOS at the bottom of the left-hand navigation menu.
3. Select Check for updates.

If your device board is in the current rollout tier, your system will begin downloading 16765.41.0 immediately. If you’re rocking a machine like the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 or Acer Spin 514, keep an eye on your notification tray over the next 24 to 48 hours as Google opens the spigot for the remaining boards.
