While we spend a lot of our time talking about high-end Chromebook Plus hardware and what’s likely to happen with the upcoming transition to ‘Aluminium OS’, the backbone of the general Chromebook ecosystem has always been affordable, reliable hardware that just gets the job done. Today, Asus is leaning fully into that lane with the announcement of the latest version of the Asus Chromebook CM14 (CM1406).
A familiar look with updated internals
The CM14 line has long been a staple for students and budget-conscious buyers, but this latest refresh brings some meaningful changes under the hood. Most notably, Asus has swapped in the MediaTek Kompanio 540 processor. While it isn’t the Kompanio Ultra chip we’ve seen in more expensive hardware lately, the Kompanio 540 is built on an efficient Arm-based architecture that promises a staggering 23 hours of battery life.

If that number holds up in real-world testing, we’re looking at a device that can easily clear two full workdays on a single charge. For a 14-inch laptop that starts at just 1.32kg (just under 3 pounds), that kind of endurance makes it a very compelling “throw-in-your-bag-and-go” machine. It’s also launching in three pretty slick-sounding colors, too: Platinum Silver, Forest Blue, and Blue Aura.
Built for the long haul
Asus isn’t just focusing on battery life here; they are also making a play for longevity and repairability. The new chassis features a redesigned bottom cover with only four captive screws, making it easier for schools or DIY-types to get inside without losing hardware. Even more interesting is the new screwless battery latching system. A dedicated bracket secures the battery, allowing for quick, tool-free swaps that are a rarity in this price bracket. I love seeing this! Here’s a quick look at the main specs:
- Processor: MediaTek Kompanio 540
- Memory: Up to 8GB LPDDR5x
- Storage: Up to 128GB eMMC
- Display: 14-inch FHD (optional touchscreen) with 180-degree hinge
- Ports: 2x USB-C (USB 3.2 Gen 1), 1x USB-A, and a dedicated HDMI 1.4b port
- Durability: MIL-STD-810H certified
A nice bonus for the AI-curious
Even though this is firmly a budget-friendly device, Asus is including a three-month trial of the Google AI Pro plan. This gives buyers access to the more powerful Gemini features, 5TB of cloud storage, and Gemini integration in Docs and Gmail. It’s a smart way to let users see what the AI era of ChromeOS feels like without having to jump straight into a more expensive Chromebook Plus model.
We unfortunately don’t have official pricing or a firm release date just yet, but given the CM14’s history, we expect this to hit retail shelves at a very aggressive price point soon. We’ll be keeping an eye out for a review unit to see if that MediaTek chip and the promised battery life live up to the hype.
