It has been almost a year to the day since we reported on the mysterious device codenamed ‘Bison’ that would bring us the equally cryptic operating system, Andromeda.
Along with ‘Bison’ we heard a number of rumors that Huawei was actively working on a new Nexus tablet that would be carrying the Andromeda operating system as well.
Honestly, I had all but forgotten about the supposed replacement for Chrome OS and Android and just as we expected, nothing ever came of the rumored OS that never was. As far as us Chromies are concerned, Andromeda will never be whether it was ever a thing or not.
A report from Stephen Hall of 9to5Google adds a bit more confirmation that the Huawei Nexus tablet prototype running Andromeda has been scrapped. Some believe parts of Andromeda were retained and made their way to the latest Android Oreo version but Google has not confirmed these reports.
All of that being said, Andromeda may not be dead after all.
There have been multiple reports as of late proclaiming a new operating system from Microsoft called, you guessed it, Andromeda.
Now, as we found in our research last year, there are countless software projects labeled Andromeda. The interesting thing about Microsoft’s version is that it greatly mirrors what Andromeda was proposed to be for the Android and Chrome OS ecosystem.
Microsoft is taking the next steps in its “One Windows” vision with an internal project called “Andromeda OS” that turns Windows 10 into a fully modular platform and lays foundations for the future of Windows.

Sound familiar?
Looks like Microsoft is looking to bring some parity to their Windows platform in an attempt to future-proof their brand. Hope that works out for them.
Anyway, at this point, we have strayed completely outside of the Chrome atmosphere. So, if you wish to learn more about Microsoft’s stab at Andromeda OS, you can do so at Windows Central.
For us, we are gearing up for Oct. 4 and whatever Google is bringing to the table with the PixelBook and more. Subscribe below and check us out on social for full coverage of the event live from San Francisco.
