If you’ve been battling “untrusted errors” on your 2nd-Gen Chromecast, you’re not alone. For over a week now, these frustrating issues have rendered many of these devices completely unusable. While Google has acknowledged the problem and is rolling out a fix, the timeline and potential for lingering issues may leave you searching for a more immediate solution.
The problem, which seems to primarily affect the 2nd-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio, has left users baffled. Google has remained tight-lipped about the root cause, but a thorough breakdown from Reddit user “tchebb” suggests it stems from an expired certificate baked into the devices. This explanation aligns with the device’s inability to authenticate, leading to the “untrusted errors.”
Google has stated in a community post that they “have started to roll out a fix for the problem with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices, which will be completed over the next few days. Your device must be connected to receive the update.” However, if you’ve already attempted a factory reset, you might still encounter setup issues, a problem Google says they’re “working to resolve.”
An affordable solution: Onn 4K Steaming Device

So, if this ordeal has left you considering alternatives, there’s luckily a simple and affordable option: Walmart’s Onn. 4K Streaming box. For a mere $20, you get a device that is not only a significant upgrade over the 2nd-Gen Chromecast but is even better than the newer Chromecast with Google TV. This device boasts the full Google TV interface, offering a modern and intuitive streaming experience but the biggest benefit is that it comes with a dedicated remote!
While the latest Onn 4K Pro offers some advanced features and hands-free voice control, the standard 4K streamer is an ideal, cost-effective replacement for anyone seeking a reliable and straightforward streaming solution. We’ve used these devices in the office and I’ve personally used them at my house for a while now and never had any issues. I just can’t recommend them enough for anyone who wants a basic Google TV streaming device!
