I’ll be the first to admit it: even when you live and breathe ChromeOS like I do, it’s remarkably easy to let some of the best productivity shortcuts slip through the cracks. That’s exactly what happened to me this morning while I was in the middle of a project. I had my windows snapped exactly where I wanted them, but my workflow quickly revealed that they were on the wrong sides.
I’d forgotten the shortcut, but something in the recesses of my brain told me to give the divider bar a quick double-click, and as soon as I did, my windows swapped places and I was perfectly positioned to finish the task a lot quicker.
The best part is that these windows don’t just trade places; they do so with a swift, fluid animation that feels intentional and controlled. They maintain their relative sizes, so you don’t have to go back and re-adjust everything once they’ve moved to their new homes.
I actually wrote about this specific “Quick Swap” feature when ChromeOS 128 first dropped a bit over a year ago, but I’d since completely pushed it out of my head. It’s a small, thoughtful touch that makes the entire split-screen experience feel incredibly polished, and it’s a perfect example of why I love this OS and why the productivity tools it possesses absolutely must survive the Android/ChromeOS merger we fully expect in 2026.
I know many of you out there might have missed this one or, like me, simply let it fade into the background of your daily habits. But if you find yourself working in split-screen today, give that divider bar a double-click. It’s a simple trick, but I promise it will make your Chromebook feel just a little bit more like the productivity beast we know it is.
