Google is doing a bit of spring cleaning with their Google Calendar widgets for Android, focusing on optimizing information density and widget scalability for both well-used home screen widgets. Thanks to a bit of digging from Android Authority via an APK teardown, we have a look at what these cleaned up widgets should look like soon.
Currently, the Google Calendar widgets provide users with the option of placing either a compact schedule overview or a comprehensive monthly calendar directly on their Android device’s home screen. While the fundamental nature of these two widgets will largely remain consistent with these latest changes, helpful tweaks to the layout are definitely on the way.

A key visual update involves the potential adoption of the Google Sans Flex font, a typeface that has previously surfaced in development builds of the application. Alongside this font change, the plus-sign icons used for adding new calendar entries appear to be undergoing a reduction in size as well.
By strategically reducing white space within the date fields, Google seems to be aiming for a bit higher information density without compromising the widget’s overall legibility. This tighter layout allows users to view more scheduled events at a glance, enhancing the utility of the widget for quickly accessing their upcoming appointments.
Though small, these changes to both Google Calendar widgets only enhance their functionality. I use my Calendar widgets on a daily basis, and having a bit more info on the screen without being forced to open the app is a huge help. Hopefully these visual updates will be arriving soon to clear up just a bit more space on your homescreens.
