When it comes to premium tablets and high-end convertibles, a great screen and a fast processor are only part of the equation. If you want a device that truly excels at media consumption, you need great audio, too. For years, devices like the iPad Pro have set the gold standard with their immersive quad-speaker setups, and it looks like ‘Sapphire’ is poised to do the same.
According to a new discovery in the Chromium Gerrit, we have confirmation that Google and Lenovo are actively making this yet another upgrade for one of the most highly anticipated flagship devices currently in development. From this recently merged commit in the Chromium Gerrit, it seems ‘Sapphire’ is getting a massive upgrade in the audio department.
The commit is pretty straightforward in its description, and in the world of tablets, a 4-channel amplifier translates directly to a quad-speaker setup. By upgrading from the standard 2-channel stereo implementation, manufacturers can separate the audio frequencies, many times dedicating two speakers to high-frequency tweeters and two to low-frequency woofers.
This is the exact same strategy Apple uses to make the iPad Pro sound so remarkably full and immersive despite its impossibly thin chassis.
For a device like ‘Sapphire’, having four speakers could completely change the media experience. Whether you are editing video, playing Android games, or just watching a movie, the audio won’t sound thin or localized to one side of the device. It will fill the space around you.
Shaping up to be the ultimate ChromeOS tablet
Every new detail we uncover about ‘Sapphire’ makes it sound less like a standard Chromebook and more like an ultra-premium flagship machine. With the blazing speed of the Kompanio Ultra, built-in biometric security, a wirelessly charging pen, 13-inch screen, and now quad-speaker audio, ‘Sapphire’ is shaping up to be the absolute must-buy ‘Aluminium’ device when it finally arrives.
