We’re just a week out from Qualcomm’s annual Snapdragon Summit, where the company will unveil the next-generation chip destined to power 2026’s flagship Android phones. However, Qualcomm has jumped the gun by announcing the name of its new silicon—the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5—and has already published a blog post to justify its confusing name before the chip itself is officially announced.
If you’re scratching your head, wondering what happened to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 4, you’re not alone. According to Qualcomm, the logic is actually quite simple, if a bit convoluted. They are counting last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite (which had no “Gen” number) as the fourth generation in the series that began with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. In a blog post, the company explained:
It might look like we skipped generations, but the truth is simpler — and more powerful. Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 marks the fifth generation of our premium 8-series platforms since we introduced our new single digit naming and visual identity. By aligning with Gen 5, we’re reinforcing its leadership position and simplifying how consumers understand our product roadmap.
The goal, they say, is to make the generational lineup easier for consumers to understand. By reintroducing the generation number, it helps clarify that these chips are all part of the same family and release timeline.
A familiar pattern of confusing names
To be fair, this is still a massive improvement over the old, even more confusing numerical branding Qualcomm used for years. But it’s amusing that they’ve managed to create a “simplified” naming scheme that still requires a pre-launch justification.
Branding gymnastics aside, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is poised to be a powerhouse. We’ll get all the official details on the chip’s performance, AI capabilities, and efficiency during the Snapdragon Summit, which runs from September 23rd to 25th. For now, we just know its name is a bit of a head-scratcher. But at the end of the day, it’s the performance that will matter most, and we’re looking forward to seeing what Qualcomm has cooked up.
