For years, Google’s gaming efforts have felt a bit fragmented, spread across different apps, platforms, and services. This week, in a massive new announcement, Google has unveiled a suite of updates to the Play Store that aims to finally create a truly unified gaming experience; complete with a new personalized hub, competitive leagues, and a powerful, Gemini-powered in-game assistant.
Meet your new in-game coach: Play Games Sidekick
The most futuristic and exciting part of this announcement is the new Play Games Sidekick, a helpful in-game overlay that will be available while you’re playing. The killer feature of Sidekick is its direct integration with Gemini Live.
Instead of having to leave your game to look up a tutorial or a walkthrough, you’ll be able to ask for real-time, conversational help from Gemini. Using its screen-sharing capabilities, Sidekick can understand your game context—what you’re doing, where you are, what you’re stuck on—and deliver AI-powered verbal tips, tricks, and support to help you through it. It’s like having an expert gaming coach available at a moment’s notice. Google will start letting users try out the Sidekick experience in select games over the coming months.
A new, unified home for gamers
This is all part of a broader push to connect the disconnected elements of gaming on the Google platform. It all comes together in the new “You tab,” a personalized home base within the Play Store. For gamers, this tab will be centered around a new platform-level gamer profile that lets you easily track your stats and achievements across all your games and devices, from your phone to your PC.
Google is also making rewards more fun with the introduction of Play Games Leagues, which will give you a chance to compete against the community for Play Points and bragging rights. The first league kicks off on October 10th with the classic Subway Surfers.
And in a huge milestone, Google Play Games on PC is officially graduating out of beta and is now at general availability, solidifying Google’s commitment to multiplatform play.
This is a massive and cohesive set of updates that shows Google is getting very serious about creating a best-in-class, unified gaming platform. The new You tab and gaming features will begin rolling out this week in select markets, with more countries being added on October 1st.
